| Abstract: | This research focuses on investigating the use of cooperative learning and discovery learning in improving students’ speaking skills, it was focused on the tenth-grade students of high school in Cimahi. The aims of this research were to seek out; (1) if there was a significant difference or not in speaking skill between students who were taught through cooperative learning and those through discovery learning. (2) how were the implementations of both cooperative learning and discovery learning in teaching speaking skill. (3) the difficulties faced by students when learning speaking skill through both learning models. This research applied a quantitative design with a quasi-experimental design as a method. Pretest-posttest non-equivalent control group was used in this research. The researcher conducted the research by using several instruments, such as test which divided into pretest and posttest, observation sheets, and interview section. The data collection of test was analyzed through SPSS 23.0 for Windows with used Independent Sample T-test to get the statistical results, while the data collections of observation and interview were analyzed with narrative discussion. The findings of this research were in the following results; (1) the Mann- Whitney U test on posttest score showed that the Sig. value was 0.00, it was lower than the criteria of significance value (0.05), so the null hypothesis (H0) was rejected and the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted which means there was a significant difference in speaking skill between students who were taught through cooperative learning and those through discovery learning. (2) the observation sheet was showed that the implementations of both cooperative and discovery learning were suitable to be applied in teaching speaking skill and students can be more active in teaching and learning. (3) the difficulties faced by students when they learned speaking skill through both learning models were affected by their psychological problems, for instance, lack confidence, fear of mistakes, anxiety, and also their problems in language, such as lacks of vocabularies, error in grammars, and misspelling in pronunciation. In the other hand, cooperative learning and discovery learning can be used by the teacher as alternatives to improve students’ speaking skill. |
